H.R. 875: Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009

Official Title: A bill to establish the Food Safety Administration within the Department of Health and Human Services to protect the public health by preventing food-borne illness, ensuring the safety of food, improving research on contaminants leading to food-borne illness, and improving security of food from intentional contamination, and for other purposes.

Commentary:
This bill would impose criminal penalties for violations of federal food safety laws and regulations that result in “serious illness” or death. Such violations would be punishable by criminal fines and imprisonment of up to 5 years, or up to 10 years if death results.
